….(and an idea for stations to hire local talk talent for zero dollars)
If you can sell, or if you can hire and inspire great sales people, you can land a talk show host position. Unemployed experienced talk hosts might consider approaching a station asking for a local talk show slot with the same consideration a syndicated talk show receives; meaning you could work for barter! This approach could line your pockets and eliminate the “budget woes” of a local station crying about “not being able to afford good talk talent”.
For example, many popular syndicated shows eat up 5 or so minutes per hour in “network/barter” time. Why not offer to work as a local host for the same consideration? You maintain ownership of the show, and reap the profits from your local ad sales. In larger markets this could be extremely valuable. The station wins by having unique local hot content, because you rule the airwaves right? You are available to voice spots and help out a little too, something Rush or Mike Savage is not available to do.
How much are spot rates in your market? Let’s say you are in a 100 dollar a minute city. Your personal endorsements and excellent customer service along with live reads could be easily worth much more. Let’s pretend 150 a minute spot rate. 150 x 5 minutes an hour = $750. 750 X 3 hours a day = 2250. 2250 X 5 days a week = 11,250. $11,250 a week X 52 weeks = $585,000 a year.
585,000 a year if sold out in my example.
If you can sell, the world is yours.
